In just under three weeks, on September 1st, we will be having our sixth annual ThorpeWood Trails 5K/10K Trail Run. It is hard to believe that we have been doing this for six years! This trail event is one of the premier fundraisers we hold for ThorpeWood throughout the year, and this year, we have decided to dedicate all of the proceeds to helping to offset the costs of the Frederick County YMCA’s youth use of ThorpeWood. That means that the money this race raises will help more of Frederick County’s kids to experience fishing, camping, hiking, and working with our Icelandic horses in our Equine Assisted Learning program. We are so excited for all the good that this race day will help us to do!
We thought you might enjoy a little “behind the scenes” look at the race today. The average reader might not know all of the work that goes into an event like this, and you might not know how many fabulous members of our community work with us to help make the day a huge success. Also, you might need a little more temptation to push you to register and come and participate in the race yourself – every registration helps! So, if it isn’t something that is good for you, think about passing the information on to a friend!
First up, we need to mention the Frederick Steeplechasers Running Club. These are the fantastic people who help to mark our course each year and who man the finish line for us, providing the stats for the top finishers and letting each running participant know how they stacked up. It is because of the work of the Steeplechasers at the finish line that we are able to award trophies to the top male and female finisher each year. Maybe this year it will be you?
Next, we need to mention our sponsors, and friends, we have some fabulous sponsors! We so appreciate the support that these organizations give to ThorpeWood. It would be very, very difficult to do an event of this scale without them. First, we want to thank Flying Dog Brewery – they will be providing post-event beer! Next, the Common Market – they are giving bananas and apples for the participants. If the Shoe Fits is donating two $25 gift cards to be raffled off, and the Trail House is also donating a gift card. Who wouldn’t want to win those? And finally, a big thank you to Fountain Rock Management for their generous contribution to help offset the costs of this event. Again, a big thanks goes out to each and every one of our sponsors – Thank You!
We also have many volunteers – friends of ThorpeWood – who come and give their time to help this event to flow smoothly. We are so grateful to them all. We could actually use a few more, so if you are interested in helping out on race day, contact us through this website, or give us a call: 301-271-2823.
As a special treat, we would like to give you a glimpse of the shirt that goes out to all pre-registered runners. You might notice that the year on the image is 2012 – yes, it is the same shirt as last year, but we guarantee it will have this year’s date! Take a look!
Wouldn’t you look great in this shirt?
We hope you have enjoyed this glimpse into the inner workings of the ThorpeWood Trails event. Please, consider registering to participate. You can still register online at active.com, or click on the events link on this website to print off a registration form and mail it in. Same day registration will also be available, but you won’t get one of those awesome shirts. See you on race day!!
