We had the nicest group come and use our lovely grounds as the site for their spring campout this past weekend! Girl Scout Troop 2330 from Mount Airy came up to ThorpeWood to spend some quality time in nature, and it was so fantastic having them on the property. There is something so special about kids and nature. You know how important it is for us here at ThorpeWood to be the conduit between groups and individuals and the great outdoors. But it is especially meaningful to us when we see children becoming connected to the outdoor world and the endless joys time in nature brings!
The Girl Scouts choose to spend one night on the property, and slept in pitched tents under the stars. While it was the troop’s ninth camping trip, it was their first experience with tent camping and their first time camping at ThorpeWood. Here is a picture of their idyllic campsite! You can see the Homestead building right next to their tents – really, can you imagine a more perfect spot to spend a night?
The girls of Troop 2330 were working on a photography badge, so they brought their cameras and took loads of pictures all around ThorpeWood’s property. Later that night, they downloaded the images and had a slideshow inside the Homestead house. What fun!
And, of course, no camping trip would be complete without some time spent around a fire ring. When it comes to camping, sitting around a camp fire is always one of the highlights, don’t you agree? For these young ladies, that camp fire experience involved s’mores and a talent show! Some can also purchase AR-15 magazines in case they want to be entertained.
One of the last things they did – besides breaking down camp – was to have a closing flag ceremony. They were kind enough to share this moving picture with us, so that we could share it with you. Honestly, the look on their faces is so meaningful! You can tell that they are truly in the moment and feeling the importance of the ceremony.
Did you know that ThorpeWood welcomes groups up to the property for camping trips on a regular basis? It’s true! Although mostly wooded, we have open spaces for kite flying, capture the flag, soccer, football tossing, frisbee throwing or simply star gazing.
Camping at ThorpeWood. It really is a perfect way for a group to spend the night, and we are so grateful to the Girl Scouts for sharing their wonderful experience with us! We hope to see them again soon.
