Snowy Days at ThorpeWood

Fgallery6-3We are so glad that the bad weather held off so that we could enjoy our Open House on Saturday.  Thank you to everyone who came out, and a big thank you to everyone who worked so hard to make the evening such a success!  There are still a few ornaments available for sale, so if you are interested, please contact Julie at [email protected], or by phone at 301-271-2823.

Well, the snowy winter they forecasted is certainly playing out as they predicted, isn’t it?  And, technically, it isn’t even winter yet!  We hope that you are all safely enjoying these snowy days.  Snow days at ThorpeWood are like any other work day – we still have to keep the furnaces running and the fires burning.  We need to take care of the horses and make sure to maintain the grounds.  Luckily our close proximity makes this a bit easier.  Like in the case of the Open House this past Saturday, we are often able to stay ahead of the storms and our events go on as scheduled.  On Sunday, however, we did have to preempt an occasion because of the weather.

We were going to play host to the director of an award-winning documentary film about Iceland’s annual horse round up called Herd in Iceland.  The director, Lindsay Blatt, was to be in this area on vacation and she had planned to stop by ThorpeWood to visit our own herd of Icelandic horses, perhaps take a trail ride, and then screen her film for us.   As you know, we are blessed to have our own herd of Icelandic horses which we use for our Equine Assisted Learning program here at ThorpeWood.   Unfortunately, the weather had other ideas and so our plans were cancelled.  We wanted to shareicelandic horse the information about the film with you anyway, and encourage you to check out their website:  www.herdiniceland.com.  This film has won several awards this season, including Best Documentary Short at both the Black Hills Film Festival and Heartland Film Festival.  Be sure to check out their site and see if you can catch a screening in your area.

And enjoy the snowy days, friends!
