On October 23rd, ThorpeWood was pleased to be the site of the awards banquet for the Northeast Regional Soil Judging contest. If you are not familiar with this effort, read this great profile on the event, recently published by the Frederick News Post.
The Soil Judging contest had participants from the University of Maryland, Penn State University, Richard Stockton College in New Jersey, University of Rhode Island, Delaware Valley College in Pennsylvania, Ohio State University, and Wilmington College of Ohio. The contest is part of the Soil Science Society of America’s commitment to soils education.
The teams studied the soil from the Matovich Farm in Adamstown. The reasons why the farm was picked for the study, and the process for competing in the challenge are highlighted in the article. It really is fascinating, and we were pleased to have been selected as the site for the awards dinner.
We welcomed over 50 people to the banquet – students, judges, and faculty – and had a wonderful dinner provided by Canapes Catering. Although many of the participants had to deal with cold conditions during their soil study, we made sure they were nicely warmed by our roaring fire, while enjoying dinner and the presentation of the awards.
Congratulations to the winning team – Penn State University! They have now qualified to go onto the National Soil Judging contest. Wonderful job! And thanks for making ThorpeWood a part of it!
